Pilot Projects Announced for County Parks' Road and Trail Plan

Pilot Projects Announced for County Parks' Road and Trail Plan
A draft plan to make Marin County Open Space District (MCOSD) roads and trails more environmentally sustainable, safe and fun will move a step closer to reality as three pilot projects get underway this spring to reduce erosion and improve visitor experience.

The Draft Road and Trail Management Plan (RTMP), presented to the Marin County Board of Directors in October 2013, will be the subject of a community workshop on March 15. Elements of the draft plan are already being used to inform the selection and design of a series of pilot projects in Baltimore Canyon, Roy’s Redwoods and Cascade Canyon preserves. The projects are scheduled for implementation later this year. The three locations are among 34 managed by the MCOSD.

The free workshop will go from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Connections Center of the Marin Health and Wellness Campus, 3240 Kerner Blvd., San Rafael. Doors will open at 9 a.m.

During the workshop, staff will review types of road and trail projects that are contemplated in the Draft RTMP, discuss details of the pilot projects, and go over how the project evaluation tool included in the Draft RTMP document will be used to screen and assess proposed projects after the plan is approved. Attendees will hear how the tool will be used to measure progress against performance objectives as well.

The RTMP will improve visitor experience, establishes and maintains a sustainable system of roads and trails that meets design and management standards, reduces the environmental impact on special status plant and animal species, sensitive resources, habitats and riparian areas. The MCOSD Board of Directors will consider adoption of the RTMP later this year.
