Hang It Up, Other Guys - There's A New Surf Company In Santa Cruz

Meet the creative and crafty mind behind Ventana Surfboards on Dec. 7 at Seymour Center's Jingle Shells.

After thousands of wood cuts in a barn workshop, countless
discussions with eco-friendly product suppliers and a host of planning meetings in the wave lineup, Santa Cruz has a new surf company.

Today, Ventana Surfboards & Supplies launched their line of eco
surf supplies. The online store at http://ventanasurfboards.com features reclaimed, hollow wooden surfboards and unique bodysurfing handplanes created by local master craftsman Martijn Stiphout.

The Ventana surf supply line includes extra-large bars of pine scented surf wax, sustainable bamboo towels, leashes made from recycled urethane, upcycled wooden wax combs, a line of organic coffee, clothing made from recycled plastic bottles and a host of other conservation-minded surf products. Ventana will also be selling soy wax candles poured into bottles collected at Santa Cruz beach cleanups.

All candle profits will be donated to Save Our Shores (http://saveourshores.org). And, Ventana is offering a 10 percent off discount code for locals (santacruz10) for any online purchases through the holidays.

“We’re trying to move the needle on environmental responsibility in the industry,” said co-proprietor David Dennis, “Everything we stock has been carefully sourced or hand made at our workshop to ensure high quality craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. Every detail matters to us, from the abalone inlay on our boards to the recycled paper bags used for our coffee to the plastic beer bottles used to make our t-shirts. We’re starting with small runs of our products, and we’ll let our customers help us decide how we should evolve.”

At its core, Ventana is a surfboard company.

“Our boards are totally unique,” said Stiphout, “I search the county to find wood off-cuts and pieces with historical significance. Many of our boards use reclaimed redwood floorboards from the late 1800s that were reclaimed from the old Schwann mansion in Twin Lakes, for instance. Each surfboard takes at least a month to build and has special details like found jade inlays and driftwood burl fins. And, we use only environmentally friendly bio-resin for our glassing.”

Ventana will be selling wooden surfboards, handplanes and eco surf supplies at the entrance to the Seymour Center’s Jingle Shells holiday craft faire on Sunday, December 7 from 12-5pm.

Martijn Stiphout will be on hand to discuss his surf crafts and unveil some special new boards. Five percent of Ventana’s profits from the event will be donated to the Friends of the Long Marine Lab.
