One in Ten Live in Poverty in San Diego County, SANDAG Says

A new report released Wednesday by SANDAG shows that 13 percent of individuals and 9 percent of families in San Diego County live below the federal poverty level.

SANDAG found that poverty rates were highest in National City, Imperial Beach and El Cajon, and lowest in Coronado, Solana Beach and Poway.

The report found 387,565 individuals living in poverty. A slight majority were women at 54 percent, compared to men at 46 percent.

Among the 64,675 families living in poverty, 28 percent reported receiving public assistance, such as Supplemental Social Security Income and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits, or SNAP, which was formerly known as food stamps.

The federal Census Bureau's definition of poverty varies based on age and family size, but was $11,945 a year in 2012 for a single person under the age of 65.

The San Diego Association of Governments is the region’s primary public planning, transportation, and research agency. It is a joint effort by the region’s 18 cities and the county government.
