To encourage and reward student participation in recycling, Waste Management and the Santee School District team up for a new program.

Recycling Fundraising Campaign Starts at Santee Schools

The five cent value per can or bottle can add up real fast in a new program for three Santee schools meant to help raise funds for the students.

The new pilot recycling program involving Waste Management, Santee's , and the , kicked off this week.

The recyclables used at , and and brought from home by the students will not only promote student awareness of recycling and the importance of their participation, but Waste Management will pay the school for the recycling and take it to the proper recycling facilities.

"As the nation’s leading recycler, we are proud to support our local schools as they educate our future leaders on the positive impact their recycling has in preserving our environment," said Carl Scherbaum, district manager of Waste Management, based out of East County.

Students are being encouraged to bring aluminum cans and plastic bottles to school where they will be collected by Waste Management, then weighed at Waste Management’s buy back center.
