UCSD Women's Volleyball Should Crack No. 2 Spot

The UC San Diego women’s volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the league’s preseason coaches’ poll was released Thursday.

Eight-time defending CCAA champion Cal State San Bernardino was the favorite to top the 2014 league standings, garnering nine first-place votes and 119 points in the poll. UCSD earned a pair of first-place votes and 109 points, while Sonoma State was third with a single top vote and 105 points.

Cal State L.A. and Chico State rounded out the top five picks in the 12-team league.

The Tritons, currently ranked 11th nationally, finished their 2013 season with a 26-6 overall record and placed third in the CCAA with a 17-5 mark. For the eighth consecutive year, the team qualified for NCAA postseason play.

Fifth-year head coach Ricci Luyties returns four starters, including first team All-American outside hitter Danielle Dahle. Also coming back are two fellow All-CCAA First Team selections in opposite Caitlin Brenton and setter Heidi Sierks. Middle blocker Kameron Cooper returns after starting all 32 matches and leading the team in blocks.

UCSD begins its 2014 campaign at the Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg, Wash., Sept. 4-5. The Tritons will take on Hawaii Pacific, host Central Washington, Saint Martin’s and 12th-ranked Western Washington.

Following the Pacific Northwest trip, the team jumps right into league play, hosting five straight CCAA matches at RIMAC Arena, starting with Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Sept. 12 and 13, respectively.
