Resident Michael Scandling was outraged Friday with the obscene gas prices in Saratoga and throughout the South Bay.

Saratoga resident Michael Scandling's wallet was hurting after his lunch hour Friday when he drove to the Valero gas station at 12600 Saratoga Ave. and paid $71.70 for a full tank of premium fuel to feed his hungry 2007 Audi A3.

By far the most popular gas station in the city, as there aren't any within city limits, Scandling chose to fill up here where about a dozen cars piled in despite the obscene gas prices.

A gallon of unleaded, unleaded plus and unleaded super was selling this afternoon at $4.59, $4.69 and $4.79, respectively.

He hadn't been on top of the news Thursday and today that state gas prices had skyrocketed quickly in just a matter of 24 hours to more than 17 cents.

AAA was reporting Friday that the average price for a gallon of unleaded fuel in California is $4.486, one of the highest in the country.

"I'm not fully acquainted with the entire problem," he said. "But I suspect there's price manipulation ... a lot of this money is not going to research and development to find other sources of fuel and that concerns me greatly."

Similarly, Charlie Chapman was speaking unprintable words at the pump. "This is ridiculous," he said. "How is a college student supposed to put himself through school, work part-time and afford this?"
