For the , students observed Earth Day with a week’s worth of activities, culminating in the planting of a tree in the school’s quad.

Earth Day fell on April 22 this year and from the April 23-27 the SVMS Interact Club hosted Earth Week for the students. Club members did a variety of things to bring attention to the environment and encourage students to get involved in making the world around them a better place.

Along with putting up posters and making announcements reminding students to reduce, reuse and recycle, Interact members encouraged students to carpool, bike or walk whenever possible. Students were also asked to “be green” by wearing green on the 27th, the day of the tree planting. All students who wore green were given a raffle ticket and 10 prizes, donated by the families of Interact student and Liberty Bank, were given out.

The SVMS Interact Club is hosted by the Scotts Valley Rotary Club and runs itself much like a mini-Rotary Club. The students take on project each year to make the world around them a better place, including one project that benefits the local community and one project that has an international impact each school year.

“It is inspiring to watch these students in action,” said Jill Hitchman, the Rotary advisor to the club. “These are our self-motivated, dynamic leaders, and watching them in action can't help but give people hope for a better future.”
