Firefighters were hampered in battling a storage facility blaze by a series of locked units.

SHERMAN OAK, CA — Firefighters tackled a blaze at a three-story public storage building just south of the Ventura (101) Freeway in Sherman Oaks Tuesday.

The fire started on the roof and spread into the attic of the building in the 4600 block of Van Nuys Boulevard shortly after 4:30 p.m. Smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the 101 Freeway during the rush hour.

Firefighters were hampered by a number of locked individual storage units, but they were able to contain the damage to a small area of the building. Crews are attempting to access the attic through the third floor, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
