Police in Sherman Oaks are searching for a pair of bandits who terrorized two senior citizens in a home invasion robbery in the 4900 block of Matilija Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The robbers forced their way into the home after inducing the couple to open the door by telling them a package had arrived, police said.

"The couple was definitely roughed up a bit," said Sgt. Robert Ward of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man who lives at the home was beaten about the head, bound with zip ties and placed in a closet; while the woman, who was not bound, fled to a bathroom, police said. Both victims are in their 60s, police said.

The man was treated by paramedics but did not seek hospital treatment.

The robbers ransacked the house before fleeing.

"At this point, we can only say they took cash and jewelery," said a sergeant at the LAPD's Van Nuys Division.

Police have not provided descriptions of the attackers and detectives declined to say what kind of weapons were used by the two men.

A neighbor who declined to give his name said crime in the residential area was low. "That's not something you really expect to happen around here," he said.

Sherman Oaks Patch will provide more details as they become available.
