The California Highway Patrol reports that 51 people were arrested for driving under the influence in the Bay Area and one person was killed in a collision south of Sonoma during the first day of the Christmas holiday weekend.

On Saturday, a 64-year-old Novato man  died in a crash along Highway 101 in downtown San Rafael.

Statewide, nine fatal collisions occurred on CHP roadways during the period between 6 and 11:59 p.m. Friday, killing eight vehicle occupants, according to the CHP. Five of those killed were not wearing a seatbelt.
