Congresswoman Speier Holding Anti-Gun Violence 'Sit-In' at San Mateo Church

Event is planned for Sunday at Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo Church.

From the office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier:

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo counties) will hold a sit-in against gun violence at the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo Church on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at 11 a.m., immediately following the service. Gun violence kills 33,000 people in the U.S. every year and injures another 80,000 individuals.

β€œNo one should have to live in fear of losing their life, especially when going to school or church, or visiting a night club, community center, or movie theater,” Speier said. β€œHowever, the stark and shameful reality in America is hundreds of people have lost their lives to gun violence in such places. Our message to Congress, the NRA, and other powerful members of the gun lobby is very clear. We will not be silenced!”

Speier and many of her colleagues are demanding that Congress calls a vote on universal background checks and banning terrorists from buying guns, modest measures that most American support, including the majority of gun owners.

On June 23, 2016, Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) led 170 Members of Congress in a historic protest on the floor of the House of Representatives. Rep. Speier joined that action and continues to hold sit-ins, town halls, and roundtable discussions in her district. On July 4, Rep. Speier was joined by 100 people at a sit-in in front of the Fox Theater in Redwood City. On August 17, she hosted a screening of β€œMaking a Killing: Guns, Greed, and The NRA” at Zuckerberg SanFrancisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
