Kara Tolbert is the Miss USA 2013 Studio City representative.
She will be asking the Studio City Chamber of Commerce for the endorsement to use the name since she has lived here for over four years and calls it home.
K 2 productions in Santa Monica conducts the official preliminaries to the Miss USA® and Miss Teen USA® Pageants. They choose Tolbert through phone and personal interviews.
Each year approximately 80 to 150 contestants compete for the Miss California title between the ages of 18 to 27 then go on to the Miss USA pageant in April.
Each contestant will be judged in three equally scored areas of competition: Interview, Swimsuit and Evening Gown. Contestants are judged by character, poise, confidence and personality.
Gaining sponsorship and performing a talent event are the way in witch the miss USA and Miss America pageants differ.
Collecting sponsorship is very important.
Tolbert said, "Along with family and friends my trainer Doug James has donated time to my sucess." It is a tax-deductible advertising expense for businesses that want to help.
Tolbert is involved with a non-profit company developed by a singer Caitlin Crosby, called Giving Keys. The message is: paying it forward. The key is you have to give the key to someone you meet that needs encouragement. Last month, The Giving Keys partnered up with The Bully Project. Proceeds go to the shelters and transitional homes that were most effective in supporting Cera and Rob, a homeless couple the company employed.
Tolbert is also passionate about the Lu Parker Project whitch she is getting more involved with. The Lu Parker Project raises funds for environmental improvements within the Los Angeles animal shelters.
This down-to-earth dancer has had her ups-and-downs for sure, being injured and unable to pursue her dream of going to a dance college in New York.
Tolbert said, "I would love to go to college and study the liberal arts." That's something she has not gotten the chance to do yet but hopes the Miss USA pageant will give that opportunity.
