Suspect Arrested in June Motel Rape

A man suspected of raping a woman at gunpoint in a Temecula motel room last month was behind bars Saturday, authorities said.

Melbrough Wiliams, 44, of Murrieta, was booked into the county jail on suspicion of kidnap for ransom with injury; strong-arm robbery; rape by threat of authority and rape with a foreign object.

He was picked up by Costa Mesa police Friday after sheriff's investigators from Temecula tracked him to that city, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Kevin McDonald.

On Saturday morning, investigators served a search warrant at the suspect's home in the 40300 Block of Jacob Way in Murrieta.

Detectives also questioned the suspect, the sergeant said.

The case stems from a rape and robbery at the motel in Temecula June 29, McDonald said.

It was unclear whether the alleged victim and suspect were acquainted with one another but the sergeant said the suspect met the victim at the motel.

Melbrough remained in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail, pending arraignment Tuesday at the Southwest Justice Center.
