Venice High School Turns 100

The neighborhood will turn out for this historic event this weekend.

This weekend, Venice High School celebrates its centennial. If you’re a student, teacher or a staff member past or present, it’s time to savor a truly significant milestone.

The festivities carry over three days, and will include a Friday night screening of the movie Grease, which was shot at the school; a blessing on Saturday morning; and the entombment of a time capsule.

Sunday’s highlight is a parade with grand marshal Walter Cunningham, a Venice High School graduate and astronaut who spent 263 hours in space.

Hundreds of skateboarders will try to make a Guinness World Record with the world’s largest skateboard parade Sunday morning.

As a side note, the actual Venice centennial won't be until Sept. 11, 100 years after the school opened its doors. But it’s appropriate to celebrate our high school’s centennial on the first weekend in summer, and the first weekend after graduation.
