Layoffs at the New AAA Headquarters in Walnut Creek

AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah says the layoffs of 28 employees at the Walnut Creek headquarters were part of an effort to restructure backoffice operations.

Walnut Creek Patch received word of layoffs taking place at the new headquarters that AAA established in late 2009, just north of the Pleasant Hill BART station.

Established in 1900, AAA offers a wide array of automotive, travel, insurance and financial services and serves more than 4 million members in Northern California, Nevada and Utah.

AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah opened its headquarters in Walnut Creek in late 2009. There are about 1,000 employees at the headquarters performing back office work in such areas as marketing, human resources, finance, and product development.

With regard to the layoffs, here is what Walnut Creek Patch heard Wednesday from AAA spokeswoman Cynthia Harris:

"As part of an ongoing effort to implement more efficient business practices, AAA Northern California, Nevada and Utah is restructuring some of its back office operations, resulting in the elimination of 28 positions at our Walnut Creek headquarters, effective September 27.

It's important to note that, company-wide, AAA NCNU currently has 221 open positions. The eliminated positions are in a variety of different back office areas including travel, products, project management, and telematics. All eligible employees will be offered severance and employee assistance."
