Update, 4:45 p.m., more details of investigation.
The sheriff's office is investigating the apparent suicide of a 32-year-old man jumping from the freeway overpass at Treat Boulevard onto Interstate 680 Tuesday morning.
The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, landed on southbound I-680 where he was pronounced dead, according to Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee. It is considered a suicide case, Lee said.
The coroner's office is investigating the incident, said Lee.
At about 9:15 a.m., authorities received a call from someone reporting a person standing on the Treat Boulevard overpass. The caller thought the person might jump, and the person did indeed jump onto the roadway, Lee said. The Treat Boulevard bridge has a nine-foot-high, chain-link fence by the sidewalk on the north side, and descends roughly 20 feet to the freeway below. A number of units of different jurisdictions reported to the scene.
Three southbound lanes of I-680 were closed between highway 242 and Treat Boulevard. The lanes re-opened in the late morning.
