NU to expand Green Button initiative to Connecticut.

Track Your Energy Use Online

If you’re like many, you don’t have any idea how much household energy you use until you see the estimates in your gas and electricity bills each month. That may soon change. By the end of the year, you may be able to track your gas and electricity use online.

Northeast Utilities will soon expand its Green Button energy tracking initiative, now in place in Boston, to all six of its gas and electricity utility subsidiaries, including Berlin-based Connecticut Light & Power and Yankee Gas. The Green Button initiative, launched by the Obama administration, calls on utility companies to allow customers to track their own energy usage online.

NU plans to offer this option to all 3.5 million of its business and residential customers by the end of the year, according to a report in the Hartford Business Journal. The Green Button will be available on utility company websites, the report says. In addition, the utilities are developing Smartphone apps for customers to track their energy use.
