BETHEL, CT — Three school buses were damaged beyond repair in a fire this past weekend.

Just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the bus depot on Henry Street for the report of multiple buses on fire, according to a report on Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company's social media.

First responders from Bethel Fire & EMS found a school bus and mini-bus "fully involved, and a second school bus catching fire. The fire was approximately 30 feet from a fuel source, as well as 50 feet from a building, according to Bethel officials, who requested a tanker.

The three buses were "damaged beyond repair," according to an email sent to parents by Superintendent Christine Carver on Sunday. The full-size buses were spares, Carver wrote, and their loss would not affect the regular schedule of bus runs on Monday.

The situation could have been much worse, according to Stony Hill officials, if it were not for a Bethel police officer who smelled smoke in the Greenwood Ave area.

"Recognizing that the odor wasn't just chimney smoke, the officer began to search the downtown area, quickly finding the source on Henry Street," fire officials posted on Facebook.

West Redding Volunteer Fire Department responded mutual aid with an engine and a tanker.
