The Garden Club of Woodbridge Goes Global

The Garden Club of Woodbridge Goes Global

Recently GCW member Pat Bender traveled to Guatemala providing "Helping Babies Breathe", an American Academy of Pediatrics approved educational program in neonatal resuscitation, to Mayan Lay Birth Attendants.  The program was sponsored by Casa Colibri, a not-for -profit humanitarian organization committed to helping the Mayan people of northwest Guatemala improve their lives through programs in health, education, and related infrastructure.  “Helping Babies Breathe” along with classes on essential newborn care and childbirth emergencies were provided to 40 birth attendants from the Barillas, Huehuetenango area.  Pat Bender said, "The 7 day trip wasn't easy, but very successful and rewarding. Our students spoke Q'anjob'al, requiring double translation and our classroom accommodations were minimal, however, all were receptive and eager to learn. It was a privilege to have been able to participate".  She and fellow volunteer, Esther Duncan wore their Garden Club of Woodbridge shirts with pride.

For over 80 years the Garden Club of Woodbridge has been giving residents of Woodbridge and its surrounding areas a great opportunity to come together to learn and share their interests in all things relating to gardening. We welcome the novice as well as the accomplished gardener and our programs appeal to individuals with a wide array of interests from birds and conservation to trees and shrubs, as well as those who want to learn more about flowers and floral arrangements.

Members enjoy educational monthly presentations, membership in the Federated Garden Clubs of CT and involvement in individual and civic gardening activities of all kinds, including horticulture, floriculture, flower arrangement, bird life and conservation.  The Garden Club meets on the first Tuesday each month, September through June, with some exceptions. Our day meetings are held at the First Church of Christ at 11:45am. Our evening meetings are held at the Woodbridge Library at 7:00pm.
