Eat Your Way To Better Health

Food For Life series teaches cooking and nutrition to area cancer survivors and those wishing to improve their health and heal from illness.

The Cancer Project's nutrition education program Food for Life comes to Brookfield this month offering a life changing program to cancer patients and anyone who wishes to improve their health naturally through their diet.

Presented by Jane Sirignano of The Cancer Project and hosted by Summit Neurological Rehabilitation, The Food for Life program translates scientific findings into practical, useable steps that can be implemented in  your life.

"Certain diets seem to have a major effect, helping people diagnosed with cancer to live longer, healthier lives," according to Neal Barnard, MD and author of the course manual and cook book. Studies have also shown that other diets (particularly a diet high in animal fats) can be risky and actually increase the toll cancer takes on the body.

Class participants can look forward to a lecture and cooking demonstration that clearly presents an easy and effective way to incorporate high nutrient foods into your daily diet.  After the lecture, students are invited to taste the meal that has been prepared, often sampling foods that they didn't know they could love.

Sirignano explained why it is important to either avoid animal products entirely, or limit them as much as possible. People with diets high in fats, particularly animal fats, have a higher risk of cancer and a shorter life expectancy. On the flip side, plant foods are powerful cancer fighters, help halt free radical damage and boost the body's immune system.

After sharing an inspiring student story of cancer survival and tremendous weight loss thanks to Food For Life, Sinignaro challenged the class, "You all can have a success story."  She encouraged students to take full advantage of what your diet can do for you and to improve your health by simply making different choices. It may seem hard at first, but when you are well informed, armed with information and knowledge, it is much easier to make the right choices everyday.

The Food for Life diet is a system for not just maintaining good health, but establishing a healthier body, boosting the immune system and effectively eliminating toxins from your system. This diet has been proven, over and over, to reduce the risk of cancer, and it can often help battle cancer and greatly improve the long term survival rate.

Learning to maintain a healthy weight without starving is considered a helpful side effect. Most people experience significant weight loss when they follow this program and trimming the excess weight can improve cancer survival and reduce the risks associated with obesity as well.

Additionally, there are many situations in which a dietary change can alter your need for medications. For example, individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels often need less medication when they improve their diets.

To register or to learn more about this series, contact Jessica Granger at Summit Neurological Rehabilitation. The cost is $10 per class. There are two classes remaining in this series, held on Monday evenings at 6 p.m.

Can't make it to the classes? There are several ways you can get started on the road to better health. The Food For Life program can be explored in depth with the book, or through Food For Life TV, a public  service of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The interactive webcasts are available as a free online video resource and features nutrition lectures, advice, cooking demos and tips for making better food choices.

Sirignano also offers one-on-one training classes and consultations. See her website for further information.
