A Darien resident reports the she and her husband spotted a coyote early Friday morning in the vicinity of .

Mary Manning said in an email that the animal — a "large coyote" — was seen in the back yard of her home, which is situated in the neighborhood between Colony Road and Hollow Tree Ridge Road.

Manning also said that her Himalayan cat hasn't been seen since the sighting.

"Please keep your small animals in at dawn and dusk," she wrote — advice echoed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

"The best way to protect pets is to not allow them to run free," the department advises. "Cats should be kept indoors, particularly at night, and small dogs should be on a leash and under close supervision at all times."
