DARIEN, CT — The Darien Fire Department has received calls from residents concerned about a possible natural gas odor in the Tilley Pond area, but multiple investigations have found that there is no gas leak, according to a post from the town on Facebook.

Instead, algae in and around the pond "is very likely" the source of the odor, the town said.

While the odor is not hazardous to health, the town noted the algae itself can be very toxic to animals, especially dogs.

"Please be aware and use caution while the odor and visible algae are present," the town said. "With cooler weather and rains, the algae, and odors, will dissipate. Please note this algae is not limited to our town parks, but is common in freshwater lakes and ponds."
