A woman was shot in the abdomen Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 385 Connecticut Ave. in West Norwalk.

The shooting was reported at around 1:45 p.m. Responding officers found the woman down in the store's east lot.

Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik said a witness saw the victim get in her car, followed by the gunman walking up to her car.

A struggled ensued, Kulhawik said, followed by a gunshot. The gunman fled on foot. The victim staggered out of her car and fell to the ground, he said.

Kulhawik said three K-9 officers were working the investigation, including one from Westport Police.

The woman underwent surgery at Norwalk Hospital, Kulhawik said, but he was unaware of her condition.

She was transported by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital. A report on her condition has not been released.

A witness told police the gunman ran north across Connecticut Avenue into a shopping center that includes P.C. Richard & Son and Best Buy stores.

Based on a track followed by a police dog, police moved their investigation across Scribner Avenue into the Colonial Village public housing complex on Suncrest Road.

As of 3:30 p.m., detectives and patrol officers were searching around residences in the housing complex as well as on Ivy Place, Freedman Drive and Quaker Road.

The gunman was described as a black male, 20-to-30 years old, 6-feet-tall, 200 pounds, clean shaven, wearing a black hoodie, dark jeans and black sneakers with white soles.
