Selectman: Thieves Still Targeting Powder Ridge

Despite its deteriorating condition, theives continue to find value in vandalizing Powder Ridge ski area.

On Monday night, state police were called to the property to investigate the apparent attempted theft of copper from one of the abandoned buildings on the site.

Police were alerted by Middlefield First Selectman Jon Brayshaw, who said he was notified by two local residents that a pile of copper piping had been found inside the building.

"They were stockpiling the copper pipes," Brayshaw said.

The copper piping was still inside the building as Brayshaw led a tour of local officials through the property Tuesday morning. Brayshaw said the town and police are limited in their ability to protect Powder Ridge from vandals due to the property's size.

The town is in the middle of negotiations to sell the property to Brownstone Exploration and Discovery Park owner Sean Hayes.
