Loco Perro

Good food and drink with a Mexican twist

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. East Hampton-Portland Patch will pick a restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's our latest choice:

Overview: Loco Perro’s offers a fun night out with some mouthwatering, Mexican cuisine and a large drink menu.

Decor: The interior holds a comfortable, rustic feel with Mexican-themed wall decorations and a fireplace. A house tradition allows customers to write their names on a dollar bill and tack it up, leaving a memory written in this tavern's ceiling.

The drinks: For a classic Mexican drink, try one of the many maragarita options.  The Premium Margarita serves from 16 ounces ($11) up to 64 ounces ($41) of Hotel California tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and a splash of Grand Marnier. The fruit margarita can be made with either strawberries, raspberries or mango from 16 ounces ($2) up to 64 oz ($5.25).

Tropical mixed drinks range from the fresh, homemade sangria ($22 a pitcher) to the Coconut Telegram, rum, chocolate, coconut and banana, invented at Loco's in honor of the Jimmy Buffett song.

Wine comes by the glass (8 ounces) with a basic selection of either chardonnay, pinot grigio, merlot, cabernet sauvignon or a white zinfandel ($7.25 to 7.75).

Domestic ($4 a bottle) and Mexican ($5 a bottle) beer is available as well as a vast array of sipping Tequilas such as Suaza Gold and Blanco.

Non-alchoholic beer, Haake Beck, is offered and coffee comes with a kick in three  flavors: Jamaican, Loco or Mexican ($8.25).

Appetizers:  For large groups, Loco’s El Grande Combo is perfect with six chicken wings, loco flauta, two stuffed jalapenos and a small chicken quesadilla served with Danny’s secret sauce ($13). The six stuffed jalapenos come in four varieties: cream cheese, shrimp and cheese, bacon and cheddar ($ 8.45), or assorted ($11).

Entrees: The Jimmy Buffet Tribute Burger, in honor of the song Cheeseburger in Paradise, is 8 ounces of beef with fries and a large kosher dill pickle ($10).  Serving two, the Loco platter is ideal for big appetites with a chicken or beef burrito, chicken taco, beef taco, flauta, small chicken quesadilla, three stuffed jalapenos, beans, rice, sour cream and guacamole ($29 ). The kids menu offers some witty options such as the Gringo burger ($6) and pigs in a blanket ($4.25).

A lunch menu presents a selection of wraps, burgers and appetizers. The cup of chili and a salad is a lunch favorite ($8) as well as the El Paso burger, 8-ounce burger topped with chili, onions, Monterey jack cheese and French onion crisps ($ 11).

Sides: Choose A La Carte items such as a taco, hard or soft, chicken or beef,  burrito, chicken, beef or beans and veggie, enchilada, chicken, beef or cheese, or a cup of soup.

Desserts: The famous indulgence, flan ($6.25) is one of several tempting dessert choices. The deep-fried ice cream ($7.25) served with Kahlua (add $2.75), the Loco mud pie ($7), the Apple crispites, two fried apple pastries with two scoops of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream ($7.25), and the Loco ice cream ($6.25) are each a satisfying way to end the meal.

Service: Walk-ins are welcome.

The banquet room is great for special celebrations as it holds up to 45 people.

Weekly discount specials are offered such as Loco Tuesdays, Wings Wednesdays and Thirsty Thursdays.

Signature Dish: The fajitas, chicken, steak or shrimp, come to the table sizzling hot with fresh veggies, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and warmed flour tortillas ($20 for a combo of two) ($21 for a combo of three).
