Somers Public Works Department Begins Road Chip Sealing Today

Project should be completed by July 18.

Somers Public Works Department Begins Road Chip Sealing Today
Somers Public Works Director Todd Rolland announces that this year's chip sealing begins today (July 9) and it should be completed by July 18, weather permitting.

Rolland said the town will be using a newer product, a 20 percent crumb rubber chip seal, which is a "greener" product than has been used in the past.

For every mile of road that is sealed, Rolland said, it recycles 1,400 tires therefore approximately 16,800 tires will be recycled. The tires are ground up and used in the mixture.

The town tested this product on Hampden, Root, and lower Stafford Roads two years ago with good success, according to Rolland.

The roads that will be sealed this year are:
• George Wood Road,
• Shaker Road,
• School Street,
• Maple Street,
• Pinney Road,
• Pioneer Heights,
• Ninth District Road from Vision Boulevard south,
• Vision Boulevard,
• And Billings Road.
