Cool Off at the Senior Center

Updated programs and news from the Enfield Senior Center

Cool Off at the Senior Center

During the heat of the summer, drop by the Senior Center for a cup of coffee or just conversation.  The Senior Center is a great place to cool off.  Play cards or billiards, read in the library, have lunch or just enjoy the air-conditioning.

The Injury Prevention Center of Hartford Hospital is offering a Mature Driver Safety Program Screening Day at the Enfield Senior Center on Friday, July 20.  This grant-funded program is a way for drivers to assess their own safety abilities related to driving. They screen for visual, physical and cognitive abilities that are known to decline as we get older.  The results may serve as a baseline or indicate the need to make some changes to improve or modify driving habits.  The screening takes one hour and is an individual appointment.  The information is confidential and is not reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles or any insurance company.  A $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card will be provided for participation.  You can see more information about the program at www.harthosp.org/driversafety.  This program was featured on Better Connecticut.  Please call the Senior Center office to schedule your appointment.

Tom and Ramona Wlazlo have generously donated a Kindle Fire for training participants on this type of tablet computer.  Look for classes to be offered late summer and the Kindle Fire will be available for lending soon after that.  Thank you Tom and Ramona for your generosity and for keeping us current with the latest technology.

One of the Enfield Senior Center’s favorite performers is Jimmy Mazz.  Jimmy will present a musical program of his favorite songs in “The Wonderful World of Jimmy Mazz” on Friday, July 13, at 6 p.m.  If you haven’t seen him, look forward to a high-energy show with audience participation.  Tickets are on sale for $7 per person.  Dessert and coffee will be served at intermission.

If you use an iPad, you may have some questions about what apps are the best.  You may also find that some of the best information comes from other users.  The iPad Users Group will meet on Monday, June 25, at 9 a.m. in the Computer Room.  This is a new group that is just forming so that iPad users can share information and learn from each other. There is no need to register.  Just stop in and join the group.

Are you a computer user?  Is there a particular skill that you have learned that you would like to share with others?  We would like to offer a series of 2-hour classes that teach a particular computer skill.  Maybe it is cutting and pasting, downloading photos, playing a game or two, researching on the internet or whatever skill you would like to share.  Please contact me if you think you may be interested.

Movie and Turkey Grinder night will be held on Thursday, June 28.  The featured movie is: Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.  Tickets are $5 for the movie and grinder and $2 for just the movie.  Grinders will be served at 5 pm and the movie starts at 6 pm.  Tickets must be purchased by 2 pm on Thursday, June 28 if you want to enjoy a Turkey Grinder.  We also have tickets on sale for Movie & Pizza night on Thursday, July 5.  The featured movie for July is Iron Lady.
