Cops: Man Abandons Car, Charged with DUI

A Bridgeport man was charged with driving under the influence early Tuesday after police found his unoccupied car left running and in reverse on an embankment on Elm Street, police said.

The operator -- later identified as Edwin Lugo, 38, of Calhoun Place -- was found on Round Hill Road after a neighbor called police about a man yelling on the street. Lugo's cell phone was found ringing in the middle of the road on Noyes Street, according to the report. Police answered the call and were told by Lugo's girlfriend that Lugo had her car and was intoxicated, police said.

Lugo reportedly admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana before driving and said he had been the one operating the abandoned car, police said. He failed field sobriety tests and was transported to police headquarters, where he was charged and released after posting a $100 bond.

Lugo was turned over to the custody of a cousin and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 28.
