A 26-year-old Fairfield man escaped his car early Monday after it veered off Black Rock Turnpike, hit a tree, flipped onto the passenger side, and caught fire, police said.

No injuries were reported at the scene of the accident, which occurred near the intersection of Black Rock Turnpike and Hemlock Road, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Sue Lussier.

The accident was reported at 1:31 a.m.; a witness approached the scene about 20 minutes after the crash occurred, the vehicle’s operator told police. The witness saw the driver had managed to get out of the car and was yelling at passengers to get out, Lussier said. Upon investigation, police and fire personnel found that there weren’t any passengers in the burning car, according to the report.

Possible narcotics evidence was seized from the car, Lussier said. The driver was transported to St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

The accident is under investigation.
