Sally Ride, the first American woman to visit space, died today after a 17-month bout with pancreatic cancer, NPR reports. She was 61.

According to NPR, Ride went into space in 1983 aboard the Challenger and again in October 1984. Plans to go back into space a third time were scrapped after the Challenger exploded in 1986.
