After living as a resident at Middlewoods of Farmington Assisted and Independent Living Community for a year and a half, Karen Conrod decided to pick up her brushes with a new purpose: teaching fellow residents to paint! Sharing her love of painting with the community, Karen now leads a regularly scheduled art class that is attended by a group of residents who gather to take up a new hobby, learn a new technique, exercise their creativity, or simply have fun! Residents are invited to choose their subject, whether it be a flower arrangement, newspaper photo, or other still life, and then encouraged to paint “freestyle”. Karen provides support and guidance throughout the class (even a reminder phone call the night before!) and offers to draw out designs for those who are looking for a bit more assistance.
The class has been quite a success and a great illustration of the many ways we can find new meaning and purpose in life as we age.
