Suzanne DeRosa, owner of Canton’s Little Green Tambourine, helped The Cobb School, Montessori in Simsbury celebrate its 40th birthday on Friday, January 10.

When The Cobb School, Montessori won Hulafrog’s 2013 Preschool of the Year last month, they knew a party with DeRosa was part of the package.  What they didn’t know is DeRosa is a traveling minstrel, equipped with party hats, balloons, stickers, and a disco ball!  Ms. DeRosa also brings her angelic voice, flexible style, and infectious smile.  All of Cobb’s students, from the toddlers in the Young Children’s Community to the elementary students who joined their younger friends for the preschool celebrations, were delighted by DeRosa’s performance.

The Cobb School, Montessori was founded as The Montessori Children’s House on January 6, 1974, an auspicious date, also marking the anniversary of Dr. Maria Montessori’s first school, Casa dei Bambini in Rome in 1907.  Cobb began with nine students on Ethel Walker’s campus.  Today, the school houses nine classrooms, educating children 15 months through 6th grade.  It is also home to a Parent Infant Community, Suzuki Music for Babies, before and after-school care, extracurricular clubs, music lessons, as well as a vibrant parent education program.  This lively and loving school community, who came together in a basement on another school’s campus, now enjoys its own beautiful, purpose-built, light-filled building on five acres with playgrounds and gardens for every class.  After 40 years of hard work, concentration, and commitment to the greater good -- bedrocks of the Montessori philosophy -- parents, teachers, and most important, the founding head, Mary Lou Cobb, have tended the school so its roots could grow deep.  The school’s motto mighty oaks from little acorns grow is not just about raising children to be strong, it’s about nurturing an idea, a belief, a promise to build a strong school, 40 years in the making.

This remarkable anniversary year has rocketed out the gate, and special thanks go to Debbie Szczepanski of Hulafrog and Suzanne DeRosa of the Little Green Tambourine.  The Cobb School considers itself lucky and loved and is very much looking forward to the next 40 years.  Happy Birthday, Cobb School, and thank you to everyone who laid a brick, literally or figuratively, along the way.
