10 Records Set at 14th Annual Greenwich Town Swim Championships

With just over 300 swimmers competing over 3 days in 48 events, the 14th Annual Greenwich Town Swim Championships proved to be once again a big holiday splash with 10 meet records!

Swimmers from the town’s four major teams, The YWCA Dolphins, the YMCA Marlins, the Boys and Girls Club Barracudas and the Sharks Swim Team got together for some friendly mid-season competition and competed at the Greenwich High School in eight races Thursday and Friday night, featuring distance freestyle and stroke events and returned yesterday for 40 sprint events.

Leading the way in the meet sponsored by the YWCA of Greenwich and the Dolphins Swim team, was 14-year old Dolphins swimmer Kate Hazlett who won all five of her events and set meet records in four of those races.

Hazlett, a student a Greenwich Academy and a member of the Dolphins Swim Team, who competed last week in the USA Speedo Junior National Championships in Seattle, set Town Meet records in the 13-14-year olds age group 100-yard Freestyle, the 100-Backstroke, 200-Butterfly and the 500-Freestyle with respective times of 54.13, 1:02.01, 2:15.62 and 5:14.32. Hazlett also claimed the 13-14 age group’s 100-Butterfly at 1:01.61.

Dolphins Coach and Meet Director Nick Cavataro commented, “I know Kate’s been faster in some of the 100-yard events, but those 200-Butterfly and the 500-Free times were very solid efforts at distances she does not get to race at very often.”

The Dolphins’ William Belmont, 17; Meghan Lynch, 11, and Olivia Baine, 10, were the meet’s other record setters. Belmont claimed three gold medals in the 15-and-over group winning the 100-Free, Back and Butterfly at 48.84, 57.39 and 53.12, respectively. Lynch, 11, won the 11-12 group‘s 50-Free at 25.43 and the 50-Breaststroke at 32.43. Baine lowered the meet record in the 8-10 mixed 100-Breast at 1:21.36.

In action in the 8-and-under group Penny Lazar, 8, claimed titles in the 25-Free, Back and Fly at 16.38, 19.65 and 18.50 respectively. The Boys and Girls Club’s Sydney Jee took gold in the 25-Breast at 21.62.

The boy’s side of the 8-and-under group saw four different boys win gold as Gavyn Gennarelli, 8, of the Boys and Girls Club won the 25-Free at 15.81 and the Dolphins Alexander Piccin, 7; Peter Murphey, 8; and, Luke Mendelsohn, 7 won the Back, Breast and Fly events at 20.23, 20.18 and 20.64, respectively.

The 9-10 girls group saw the Marlins’ Caterina Li, 10, take three wins in the 50-Free, Breast and Fly events with times of 27.98, 36.30 and 31.08 respectively. The boy’s 9-10 group saw the Dolphins Patrick Mullen,10, take the 50-Free at 29.15 and the 50-Back at 34.46 with the Marlins’ Liam Flaherty, 10, winning the 50-Breast at 39.92 and the 50-Butterfly at 32.73. Mullen also won the mixed 8-10-year old, 100-back at 1:15.40 with the Dolphins Zoe Sorensen, 10, striking gold in the mixed 8-10 100-Butterfly at 1:19.36.

The 11-12 group Marlins’ Lexi DeLaSierra win the 50-Back at 31.00 as the Dolphins Mark Merson, 12, took three golds winning the 50-Free, Back and Butterfly at 26.78, 33.04 and 30.06 respectively with teammate Alexander Hazlett winning the 50-Breaststroke at 36.73.

The Dolphins Issy Wise won the 13-14 100-Breaststroke at 1:15.64 with the Dolphins’ Parker Scott and Jesse Horowitz, each posting a pair of wins. Horowitz won the 13-14 100-Free and Backstroke with respective times of 55.74 and 1:04.53 and Scott took the 100-Breast and Butterfly at 1:15.46 and1:06.09 respectively. Horowitz, 14, also claimed the 10-and-over mixed 200-back at 2:1721 with teammate Emma Himes, 14, taking the groups 200-Breatstroke at 2:38.73.

The 15-18 class saw the Dolphins’ Brooke Collins claim the 100-Free, Breast and Butterfly races at 58.02, 1:13.56 and 1:05.95, respectively with Sarah Bellamy of the Dolphins winning the group’s 100-Backstroke at 1:04.80. The Boy’s side saw Thomas Mackey of the Dolphins won the 100-Breasttsroke at 1:06.40.

Speaking of the meet, now in its 14th year, Cavataro continued, “this is a very special meet for a lot of these kids who do not often get to see each other at the same pool, but may see each other in the halls at school and the stands were backed with not only parents, but, grandparents and relatives in town for the holidays. This type of meet does not happen anywhere else in the USA!”
