Unseasonably Warm Spring leads to Greenwich Daffodil Show cancellation. First time in 55 years!
The Greenwich Daffodil Show, scheduled to be held at April 25- and 26th has been cancelled due to the early spring and warm weather.
The GDS board met Wednesday and made the difficult decision as a majority of the daffodils in town are now well past there peak. Last year, in addition to displaying over 1,000 cut blooms the show also featured an Artistic design and Photography Division. All divisions of the show have been cancelled for 2012. The show has been a rite of spring for the past 55 years.

GDS is optimistic for the future, and the fall planting season. Here are a a few tips for you can take now to ensure beautiful blooms next Spring: once the flowers are spent- deadhead them but leave the stems as they are more important nutritiously then even the leaves are. After you deadhead is a great time to divide your bulbs. Do not bend or fold the foliage-but let it die back naturally. Use companion plants such as hosta, ferns, and day lilies to cover the leaves as they fade. Do not use Hollytone on bulbs or plant bulbs in areas covered by sprinkler systems. To help with your fall planning, photograph where the empty spots are now and be sure to include late bloomers in your bulb order.
Daffodils are becoming a favorite flower of our town- with each year bringing new displays of plantings around Greenwich. The flowers are desirable as they are deer, rabbit and chipmunk resistant.

Next year the Greenwich Daffodil Society will host a special award for the best public display of daffodils. The plantings must be visible from the road - and nominations will be open to the public. In 2013, the show is scheduled to be held April 24-25th. Anyone may enter the show, and you do not need to be a member of a garden club to participate.
