Cleaning Up Long Island Sound: How You Can Help

Environmentalist Jeff Yates will discuss Watersheds: Working to Restore Them on Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center at Innis Arden Cottage in Greenwich Point Park.

Yates will discuss the efforts being taken to improve water quality in Long Island Sound by improving the water quality in the many rivers flowing into it. The discussion is scheduled for 1:30 to 4 p.m.

“I want to reach area residents who can take steps to reduce their impact on the Sound by making sure they are not impacting the local river, creek or storm drain in their own backyard.”

Children are welcome to stop in to see the live animal marine touch tank at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center and to participate in hands-on activities including “Pin your Home on the Watershed” map. Families also can learn about shellfishing in Greenwich waters from members of the Greenwich Shellfish Commission.

Following the talk, Yates will be available for questions and to sign books. Yates is an author, fly fishing guide, director of Trout Unlimited, and environmental program manager at Fairfield County Community Foundation.

The event is free and part of the First Sunday Science program, which occurs on the first Sunday of every month year-round, and is organized by the Bruce Museum and Greenwich Shellfish Commission. Reservations are not required.
