Edwin Peter Fox, 83; U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Retired Greenwich Postal Service Worker

Edwin Peter Fox (“Pop”) passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014. He was 83.

He was born in Greenwich on Jan. 31, 1931 to Frank and Anna (Shreders) Fox.

Ed attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Greenwich High School in 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1954 and served during the Korean War. After he was discharged at the rank of Private First Class, he began a career as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service in Greenwich. He retired from the post office after 32 years, and worked at Cadbury Schweppes in Stamford for 10 years and at Ivey, Barnum and O’Mara in Greenwich for a few years before fully retiring.

After retirement, Pop spent many hours attending his grandchildren’s many sporting and school events.Ed was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish in Byram, and was a member of the Holy Name Society serving as an usher at Mass for many years. Ed was active in the Greenwich Catholic School system’s Home School Association and a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He worked for many years for the Greenwich Parks and Recreation coaching, running the open gym for basketball and umpiring baseball.

Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Tuure Fox, and his seven children Timothy (Lenore) of Brookfield, Mark (Toni) of Stamford, Cheryl (Michael) Galante of Newington, Matthew (Leslie) of Plymouth, MN, Natalie (Mark) Sabanski of Stamford, Theresa of Greenwich and Brian (Lori) of Trumbull; his 24 grandchildren Jason (Jerica), Danielle, Gabriella and William Fox, Drew, Adam and Jacob Fox, Laura, Jennifer, Michael and Peter Galante, Ryan and Abbygail Fox, Jared and Justin Sabanski, Allison, Christian, Matthew, Helen and Fisher Bray, Sydney, Owen, Leah and Noelle Fox, and his two great-grandchildren, Dominic and Olivia Fox.

He is also survived by his brother Robert Fox, his sisters Grace Butler, Elaine Jordan, Elizabeth Morus and Virginia Davies and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Ed was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Thomas and Raymond and his sisters, Ruth Tyburski and Anita Styles.

A wake will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Castiglione Funeral Home, Inc., 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. A memorial mass will be held at a later date.
