Coastal flooding and high winds may accompany heavy rain on Tuesday, with more rain continuing Wednesday, then possible snow on Thursday, which is likely to turn into rain, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service issued a Coastal Flood Warning for minor to moderate flooding from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in western Long Island Sound. Those along vulnerable shore roads could be affected, along with basements that are particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Tides could be 2.5 to 3.5 feet higher than normal at those times on Tuesday.

Heavy rain starting Tuesday morning and persisting through the day could cause flooding along rivers and streams, the National Weather Service said in a separate Flood Watch for the Metropolitan New York area, extending through southern Connecticut.

“Rain will be heavy at times, with 2 to 4 inches possible by the time the event ends Tuesday night,” the weather service said in the Flood Watch. “Localized higher amounts are possible. The main impact will be urban and poor drainage flooding.”

In addition to rain and flooding, expect heavier winds Tuesday in southern Connecticut and the New York metropolitan area, the weather service said in a Wind Advisory. Winds as high as 50 mph may be experienced along the coast, the weather service said.
