Greenwich Citizens Police Academy Accepting Applications

The Greenwich Police Department also is offering self defense classes for teens and women; membership open for Police Explorer program.

The Greenwich Police Department is planning several programs for the community offering opportunities to learn about the department and self-defense classes for high school teens and women.

The Greenwich Police Department is accepting applications for the 2014 Fall Citizens Police Academy. Applications can be found on the Town of Greenwich website or in the lobby of Police Headquarters and Town Hall. Classes begin on Sept. 30, and the application deadline is Sept. 25. Classes meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Youth Citizen Police Academy is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 22, 2015. With the addition of some topics, the Greenwich Police Department is planning on making this a five-day academy. Applications are currently not being accepted at this time.

The first ever Greenwich Police Department Youth Citizens Police Academy (YCPA) was held in June with 35 students ranging from middle school children to incoming freshmen who learned about Physical Fitness, Police Marine Operations, Bullying and Social Media Awareness from Greenwich Police instructors with the goal to introduce the youth community in a positive environment through a fun and interactive experience.

The Women’s Self Defense Course is tentatively scheduled to begin on Oct. 1. Classes meet twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays. This year the Greenwich Police Department will be offering one class solely for Greenwich high school students (public or private) in grades 11 or 12. The additional class will be for women between the ages of 18 to 55. Applications will be available online at the Town of Greenwich Website after Sept. 3.

The Greenwich Police Department Explorer Program, a learning for life organization which is operated under the Greenwich Council Boy Scouts of America, is always accepting new members. The Police Explorers are high school students for both boys and girls 14-18 years of age. The Police Explorers hold monthly meetings which included police related topics and participate in numerous community events throughout the year including some of the following: Walk for Life, Bicycle Safety Rodeos, Hunger Walk/Run and Police Day.
