Updated: Greenwich Police Issue Warning: Man Reportedly 'Watching Children' in Byram
Police say nothing criminal has occurred but they're asking for residents' vigilance; if they have had contact with the man, contact police.

Update: 7:23 p.m.
Greenwich Police say while nothing illegal has been reported, “there have been enough reports for us to remain watchful” of a pony-tailed man who’s been seen watching children in the Byram neighborhood on the western end of town.
“There have been several people who have had several contacts with him. He is not wanted. He is not on a sex offender list and not on probation,” said police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray. “But if you have had any dealings with him, contact us.”

Those were the comments from the department’s spokesman after the release of a warning Monday evening that the man has been seen on “several occasions” watching children on Richland Road, Henry Street and in the area of the state line where the town meets Port Chester.
Gray said that police have received “several reports” of the man being observed in the area throughout the month of October.

Original story: 6:14 p.m.
Greenwich Police issued a warning Monday evening for residents to “be watchful around schools, libraries, and playgrounds” as a man has been “observed in the Byram area … watching children on several occasions this month.”
A red 2013 Volkswagen GTI with New York license plates “has been seen in the area watching children on several occasions this month,” according to the statement issued by police. “The subject has been observed in the Byram area (Richland Road, Henry Street and state line areas). The operator of the vehicle is a white male, approximately 6-foot-four with a pony tail.”
Police say they have identified and interviewed the owner, described as “a local New York resident. The detectives are unable to establish probable cause for an arrest nor is a warrant likely based upon the previous reported incidents. However, the known facts merit our increased vigilance; please be watchful and document any dealings with the subject.”
According to the statement, “The subject is NOT wanted nor do we expect anyone in the general public to approach him. We are hoping community members will remain watchful and notify us of any suspicious activity around those areas were children congregate.”
Police are asking that “If anyone has had and previous contacts with the described subject or see any suspicious activity, please call the non-emergency number at the police department 203-622-8001. If they want to leave a message anonymously, call 203-622-3333 or 1-800-372-1176, or email: tips@greenwichct.org.
Greenwich Police did not immediately return messages seeking further comment and information.
