Growing Greenwich's Culinary Landscape

The New York-based gourmet food stores Citarella is opening its first Connecticut store on the western end of town.

Greenwich gourmands soon will have another option on their culinary landscape.

The New York City-based, family-owned gourmet food chain Citarella is putting the finishing touches on a gourmet market and wine shop at 600 W. Putnam Ave. that’s expected to open in coming months. The company already held a job fair for prospective employees earlier this month.

Established in New York City in 1912, Citarella is owned Joe Gurrera, whose family started out as fishmongers and have evolved into “one of the top food destinations in Manhattan and the Hamptons,” according to the company’s website. The Greenwich location will be the first Connecticut operation for the company that has three stores in Manhattan and three in the Hamptons.

Gurrera has applied for a liquor license to open a wine shop at one end of the building that’s opposite the intersection of West Putnam Avenue and Valley Drive.
