Joseph Andrew Sobeski, 87; Lifelong Greenwich Resident, U.S. Navy and Army Veteran

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1 with the funeral scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2.

Joseph Andrew Sobeski passed away surrounded by family on Sept. 27, 2014. He was 87.

He was born at home on Aug. 2, 1927 to Andrew and Kathryn(Sroka) Sobeski in Byram.

Joe attended New Lebanon and Greenwich High School graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the Navy. After his discharge, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Kancir. As they started their married life, he was inexplicably drafted into the Army and was discharged from there shortly after the birth of their first child.

Joe worked for many years first as a machinist, then as the manager of manufacturing for AMF- Thermatool. After his retirement, he and Marilyn spent many wonderful years traveling with their family and friends. Joe was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Byram, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Byram Veterans Association and the Glenville Seniors.

Joe’s smile was infectious and his good nature and happiness was unmatched.

Joe leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn; his devoted children Scott (Anna) Sobeski of Greenwich, Barbara (Ed) Sturm of New Milford, JoEllen Genovese and Donna Sobeski, both of Greenwich; and the greatest joys of his life, his grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Victoria Sobeski, Kelly Genovese and Eddie(Alex), Andy and Jeff Sturm. He is also survived by his sister, Winnie Skibinski, nieces, nephews and many wonderful and caring friends.

Joe was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Josephine Musor and Sophie Roman.

A wake will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Castiglione Funeral Home, Inc. 134 Hamilton Ave., Greenwich. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Sacred Heart Church, 95 Henry St., Greenwich with burial to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
