The Rummage Room -- Celebrating 50 Years in the Old Greenwich Community

This community institution has a loyal following and during the last half-century, has raised more than $4 million for various causes.

There aren’t many businesses or organizations that can boast growing a thriving community following in the same location for 50 years.

It was 50 years ago, back in October 1964, that a new shop opened its doors at 191 Sound Beach Ave., in Old Greenwich. This year that very same shop, The Rummage Room, is celebrating 50 years in the same location and providing funds that support many worthy missions and charities.

The idea of the little shop — nestled next door to another local institution, Garden Catering — began well before 1964 when a large rummage sale was held twice yearly at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich. The sales became so popular that the church eventually needed a permanent space. That’s when The Rummage Room moved to its location on Sound Beach Avenue and became “the best little shop in town.”

Today, The Rummage Room is still operated by the church’s Women’s Fellowship and remains a great place to find a bargain, donate new or gently used items, all while making a tax deductible donation. Over the past 50 years, The Rummage Room has been responsible for contributing more than $4 million to local, national and international benevolent organizations focused on helping women, children and families.

Come by all this month and help them celebrate The Rummage Room turning 50 years old. Donations of gently used items are always appreciated.
