With Sandy Paws, Greenwich Point Goes to the Dogs

The annual rite of Dec. 1 — Greenwich dog owners get to let their canines romp on the beach.

Paw prints in the sand.

That’s all that could be seen at low tide late Monday afternoon at Greenwich Point — affectionately known as Tod’s Point — in Greenwich.

Dec. 1 marked the official start of the four-month reprieve for all canines and their masters and mistresses to take them for a romp in the town’s most popular waterfront park. Canine aficionados from throughout the area love the fact that non-residents can enter the usually residents-only park — for free AND with their dogs.

Alice, a Wheaton terrier, and her “sister,:” Trixie, “a little mutt,” “loved Freedom Day”, said their master John Motay. “They love coming here. They were hyperventilating when we were driving here,” said Motay as his wife Laura Kaehler looked on. The couple has been bringing their dogs to Tod’s Point for five years now.

And if you’re wondering, the couple is a fan of ‘The Honeymooners,’ hence the dogs’ name after the two female leads in the 1950s sitcom starring Jackie Gleason, Trixie Norton and Alice Kramden.

The dog play allows the canines to learn how to socialize and play with balls, something that Trixie needed, said Motay.

“This is awesome. We’re lucky to have this,” said the mistress of Kona, a black lab rescue dog, who didn’t want to give her name.

From labs, to German shepherds, French bull terriers and mixed breed rescue dogs, ran amok — charging into the cool waters to fetch tree branches and balls.

For Megan Pavia and Frank Cogliano, Monday afternoon at the beach meant their rescue Dalmation Rocky was able to run off pent up energy after riding back from a holiday trip to Boston.

“We’re really loving the first day. I try to come every Sunday with him and my dad,” said Pavia.

So dog owners, you have until March 31 to enjoy the spoils of Greenwich Point with your canines —but remember pick up after them. Oh, and to make it even easier, the town supplies those doggie-doo mitts to clean up.
