Shoe Designer Vince Camuto, 78, Has Died

The Greenwich-based shoe designer reportedly suffered from cancer.

Vince Camuto, the designer of the sleek, high-toned and high-heeled women’s footwear, has died at his home in Greenwich. He was 78.

Camuto died Wednesday at his home in Greenwich, Matthew Murphy, director of the Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home in Greenwich, that is handling the arrangements, told NBC Connecticut.

Camuto had been reportedly battling cancer.

The designer co-founded the shoe company Nine West Group in 1978 and served as its creative director for two decades before being named CEO in 1993. Camuto and former business partner Jerome Fisher founded Nine West in 1978 and the footwear company was sold for $900 million in 1999, according to the New York Post.

In 2001, Camuto founded the Camuto Group, which owns his namesake footwear line. It also licensed products for Tory Burch, BCBG and others and last year he told Women’s Wear Daily that he didn’t have any plans to retire.
