WEATHER UPDATE: Heavy Snow, Ice Hitting Greenwich Today

The National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service’s Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. today.

In a storm that already dumped several inches of snow on the area overnight, we are now firmly in the midst of a major ice storm that will continue throughout the day including this evening’s commute.

The heavy snow is mixing with sleet and freezing rain and will continue throughout the day accumulating an additional 2-4 inches and a total storm accumulation of 8-12 inches.

The National Weather Service says snow and freezing rain will until 2 p.m. and then snow, freezing rain and sleet from 2-4 p.m. and snow likely after 4 p.m. Up to a half-inch of ice accumulation is possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow is expected to end about 8 p.m.

  • This Afternoon: Snow and freezing rain before 4pm, then a chance of snow. High near 29. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. North wind 11 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.2 to 0.4 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
  • Tonight: A chance of snow, mainly before 8pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 7. Wind chill values between -10 and zero. Blustery, with a northwest wind 17 to 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 22. Wind chill values between -10 and zero. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph.
  • Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. West wind 3 to 7 mph.
  • Wednesday: A slight chance of snow showers after 10am. Cloudy, with a high near 36. Light south wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Wednesday Night: A chance of snow showers, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Thursday: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
  • Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 7.
