Groton City Police Officer Delivers Baby on Cutler Street

Both baby and mother are fine

Groton City Police Officer Delivers Baby on Cutler Street

A Groton Police Officer delivered a baby boy on Cutler Street at about 2:30 a.m. today.

Sgt. Mark Tourville said a 23-year-old woman called 911 saying she was in labor, and her door was unlocked, so he went inside. He found her on the living room floor.

“She wasn’t really panicky,” he said. “I think emotionally, it’s her first baby so she had a lot going through her mind. I think she was scared.”

Police did not release the woman’s name.

“I just told her to breathe and the baby was already crowning. You could see the top of his head,” Tourville said.

The baby boy was delivered within 30 seconds to a minute, he said.

“Cute little thing,” he said.

The ambulance was already in route, and a firefighter from the Groton City Fire Department arrived right behind Tourville and suctioned the baby’s nose and mouth.

Then Tourville wrapped the baby in a blanket and handed him to his mother. Both were in good condition and were taken by ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.

This is the second baby Tourville has delivered. The first was about 20 years ago, and he believes it was also on the living room floor.

“It was one of those things that is nice to do,” said Tourville, whose son is 18. “It was nice to help somebody.”
