Harold A. “Skippy” Owens Jr., 88, Retired New Haven Fire Department Assistant Chief

His funeral will leave Sisk Brothers Funeral Home in Hamden on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Harold A. "Skippy" Owens Jr. died July 4 in Hamden. Harold was born in New Haven, June 8, 1926, son of the late Harold A. and Marion Monk Owens, Sr. 

The husband of the late Gail A. McDonough Owens, he proudly served his country with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Mission Bay during WWII. Owens rose though the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief and retired in 1992 as an Assistant Chief with the New Haven Fire Department after 42 years of distinguished service. 

He received meritorious citations for his actions at a fire in 1979, was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1982, which is the 3rd highest award the New Haven Fire Dept. bestows. Skippy also received 2 Unit Awards and Firefighter of the Year from Box 22 Associates and the Knights of St. Patrick. 

He was the loving father of Susan Owens (George Stevens) of Stratford, Kevin B. Owens, Lieutenant NHFD (Nancy) of East Haven, Maura Neville (Thomas, Battalion Chief, NHFD) of North Haven and Brian M. Owens, Ret. NHFD (Patricia) of Hamden, and brother of Barbara Weimar of Fishkill, NY.

He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Tiernan & Caley Neville, Presley, Kyle & Kirsten Owens.

He was predeceased by brothers, Jack, Joseph and Paul Owens, and a sister Marion Brehm.

His funeral will leave Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave. Hamden, Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Burial in All Saints Cemetery.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m.
