Police: Keep Track of Your Car Keys At Gyms

Police are advising gym-goers to make sure their cars are locked and the keys in their possession at all times while they're working out in the wake of 10 reports of thefts from parked cars.

Since March 1, there have been 10 reports of thefts from motor vehicles parked in two gym parking lots, according to police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

Police believe that the thieves steal car keys from the gym lockers while the owners are working out, Smith said, and then find the cars in the lot and steal valuables from the vehicles.

"Hamden police would like to remind gym members to remove all valuables from their vehicle, lock their vehicles and keep their car keys in their possession while they exercise," Smith said.

"Several investigations revealed that individuals responsible for the thefts are entering lockers and removing car keys," he said.

Smith did not specify which gyms the incidents took place, but earlier this week police conducted a search for individuals suspected of breaking into vehicles in the area of Dixwell Avenue.
