From Jon Heflin, the lacrosse photographer:

"The most recent game was against Branford.  The girls won 13-2.  The team is currently 5-4.  They have played one of the toughest schedules in the state.  After playing in the State Finals last year it is no wonder their schedule is so tough. Their four losses are all to top 10 teams, all of which are outside of their class M division.

The team is still dominating in the SCC and is currently 5-1.  They travel to East Lyme on Tuesday night for a rematch of 2011's State semifinal won by HAND in overtime.  This should be a very good game with a top ranked team in their divisional classification.

Co-Captain Kara McHugh is the team's top goal scorer and is listed in the state's top 5 each week.  She also plays excellent defense and is one of the state's top players to watch.

Goalie Christy Forrest is also one of the state's top goalies.  She currently has a goals against average in the SCC of less than four.  Even with the team's losses to Greenwich, Simsbury, Cheshire and Hall, Christy is still in the State's top three for goalies.

Major contributions have come from seniors Meghan Kane(team's second leading scorer), Taylor Raleigh, Shaelin Gottlick and Courtney Leblanc.

Hannah Johnson, Jayna Concannon and Eliza MacLoud lead the Juniors.

Unexpected contributions and major play have come from Sophomores Brooke Barry and Brenna Hogan."

The LadyTigers lost a tough one this past week to East Haven. Here's what Coach Tim Tredwell had to say about that:

"Kelsey Cuddy led the Tigers with 17 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks while Kara McHugh added 16 points. East Haven's Amanda Bradley dropped 19 points while Danielle Polvan chipped in 18. Shauna Dineen hit a FT with 0.0 left on the game clock to win it.

"Beating a team three times in one season is tough. We really put ourselves in a hole with Cuddy, Hannah Johnson and Gianna Amplo all having two fouls in the first quarter. Still, we hung around and managed to briefly take a lead late in the second half. With under a minute to go and the score tied, we had a chance to take the lead but missed a good opportunity. Just needing a stop to force OT, we got called for a foul with no time left on the clock allowing Dineen to hit the winning foul shot.
This knocked us out of the SCC tournament but we still have the State tourney coming up. It looks like we will host Bunnell on Tuesday, Feb. 28th."

Thanks to our basketball correspondent Jon Heflin for the great photos!

From Jonathan Heflin, our basketball correspondent:

"It was senior night where the graduating seniors, Kara McHugh, Kelsey Cuddy, and Jackie Strickland were recognized. When the game began, against Sheehan of Wallingford, the Lady Tigers played well. They built up a good lead in the second half then fought off a nice rally by the Titains to win the game 50-45. The next game for the Tigers is Thursday at 6:30 where they will be hosting the first round of the SCC Tournament. The Lady Tigers finished the season 13-7 and are headed to the state playoffs."

"The girl's basketball team defeated a good Sacred Heart team last night 46-44," says our basketball correspondent Jon Heflin. "It was very reminiscent of the game with East Haven last week although no overtime was needed."

"The LadyTigers were never ahead until 2.5 seconds left in the game. Kelsey Cuddy had once again gone the entire length of the court with the score tied and 9.6 seconds left. She went to the basket and put up a layup and HAND had their first lead of the game."

"After a timeout by Sacred Heart the ball was inbounded. The next pass was broken up by Jackie Strickland and time ran out........HAND wins."

"The last game of the regular season is Monday February 13 at 7 PM. It is also senior night. The Tigers will entertain Sheehan of Wallingford."

The Daniel Hand High School Basketball team won a tough one against Foran Tuesday night.

"The Girls basketball team defeated Foran of Milford 47-43 tonight," says Jon Heflin, our basketball correspondent. "It was not pretty but the girls got it done."

Coach Tim Tredwell agrees.

"It was another tight one. We held the lead for the majority of the game even though we couldn't seem to hang on to the ball. Still, with 13 seconds left and a two-point lead, our defense stepped up and got the stop we needed to seal the win. Kelsey Cuddy had a team high 12 points along with 7 rebounds. Hannah Johnson added 10 points while Kara McHugh chipped in 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds."

You go girls!

DHHS Basketball Coach Tim Tredwell tells us that Friday night was another big night for Hand!

"The Tigers cruised to a 59-37 win behind 21 points from Kelsey Cuddy and 19 from Kara McHugh. Cuddy also scored her 1000th career point on a first quarter foul shot. It was the first time Hand has swept the season series from Guilford since the 2007-08 season," said Coach Tredwell.

Thanks again to Jon Heflin for the terrific photos and for reporting in the results!

With Seconds To Go! She Shoots! She Scores! They Win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Daniel Hand High School basketball team found itself locked in a tie at the end of regulation play during their game against East Haven Wednesday night.

"With six seconds to go in overtime and the game tied Kara McHugh inbounded the ball to Kelsey Cuddy who went the length of the court and put up a shot with one second to go.  She was fouled on the play but it did not matter............her shot went in!!  Game over, HAND wins," says Madison photographer Jon Heflin, who uploaded the amazing pictures above of the game.

From Coach Tim Tredwell: "It was a fun one! Kelsey Cuddy had 24 points, 13 rebounds, 8 steals, seven blocks AND hit the game winning shot in OT as time expired. Kara McHugh was in double figures with 12 points and Jackie Strickland added 8."
