Manchester Honors Newtown Victims with Candlelight Vigil

The moving tribute was held Wednesday night in Center Memorial Park.

The town held a moving and somber interfaith vigil to honor the victims of the Newtown school shooting Wednesday night in Center Memorial Park. 

The vigil was emceed by Beth Stafford, executive director of the Manchester Area Conference of Churches, and included readings by a ministers of a number of different faiths, as well as addresses from Mayor Leo Diana and Board of Education Chairman Chris Pattacini. 

Twenty white roses were placed in a basket to honor each of the 20 children killed on Dec. 14, 2012 in Newtown, in what was one of the worst mass shootings in American history, and an additional six red roses were placed in the basket to honor the six adults who were also killed. Stafford said she and some of the other ministers who took part in the ceremony planned to presents the flowers as a gift to the city of Newtown on Thursday. 

The Salvation Army was also on hand to hand out free hot chocolate during the vigil.
